How can the BaseCamp help you?
By engaging with BaseCamp, you’ll understand why protecting your privacy and digital freedom is more crucial than ever. You’ll become aware of the risks of revealing too much personal information and learn which behaviors, apps, and providers can jeopardize your privacy. The BaseCamp toolbox provides you with the tools, behaviors, and apps that protect your privacy and help restore your anonymity.
Start over, rethink, develop further
BaseCamp represents a fresh start—a gradual shift towards “Less, with more privacy, quality of life, and security.” It also fosters an understanding of current global changes and the importance of fighting for privacy, just as we fight for a healthy environment.
Gradually adjust your personal behavior:
- Data Economy: Practice data minimization.
- Secure Encryption: Understand the necessity of encryption without backdoors for authorities.
- Trustworthy Providers: Learn how to assess reliable technology, software, and service providers.
- Open-Source Advantages: Discover the benefits of crowd-funded and open-source applications.
- Decentralized Solutions: Recognize the superiority of decentralized solutions over centralized cloud-based services when it comes to privacy.
Implement proposed concepts and adjust your applications set e.g.:
- Use a secure and privacy oriented browser, search engine and VPN
- Have a secure and trustworthy password manager.
- Change to an instant messengers for encrypted communication without tracking.
- Learn that there are secure providers for email, contacts, calendars and office work.
- Back up your data on an end-to-end encrypted cloud storage.
- Do video conferencing when you data is encrypted and not recorded.
Last but not least you will learn how to work secure and private with your devices. You learn e.g.:
- How secure your computer Windows, Mac and Linux
- What it takes to have a secure and private mobile device e.g. iPhone and Android with GraphenOS
All content in the Self-Defense BaseCamp is based on CloudPirat’s extensive research since 2016, with all concepts and applications personally tested and used daily. The program is continuously updated with new developments.
Enjoy your learning journey, and I look forward to your feedback.
What comes after the Self Defense BaseCamp?
Once you feel comfortable with what you’ve learned in the BaseCamp and have internalized it, you can move on to the advanced topics introduced in the Advanced Self Defense course. Advanced Self Defense is for individuals facing a higher threat level, including activists, journalists, companies, and anyone else who needs it. This is the next level after BaseCamp, and it will be offered at CloudPirat Academy.

My special thanks to the following organizations and people. From their sometimes different perspectives and recommendations, I tried to form a usable condensate for everyday life.
Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), an international NGO based in San Francisco. The EFF has been campaigning for digital freedom rights for 30 years.
accessnow, an international initiative for digital freedoms. Among other things, AccessNow maintains a 24×7 HelpLine that actively supports civil rights activists and journalists in defending their IT security.
PrivacyGuides, very reliable source with constantly updated recommendations for trustworthy and secure IT solutions that protect your privacy
Kuketz-Blog, for me the best German blog about IT security and privacy.
Restore Privacy , a US blog with a strong focus on digital privacy and IT security. Everything well tested and described.
Tactical Tech Collective , international non-professional based in Berlin. You deal with the impact of technology on society. Projects like “Digital Detox” = digital self-defense or “Exposing the Invisible” = internet research in public sources are really extremely well done.
